Trauma is the emotional, psychological, and physiological response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or overwhelming.

These events can exceed a person’s ability to cope, leaving them feeling unsafe, helpless, or disconnected.

Trauma can result from a wide range of experiences, such as abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, natural disasters, or significant loss.

Types of Trauma

Acute Trauma: Stemming from a single distressing event, such as an accident or assault.

Chronic Trauma: Arising from prolonged or repeated exposure to distressing events, like ongoing abuse or neglect.

Complex Trauma: Resulting from multiple, interrelated traumatic experiences, often beginning in childhood.

Developmental Trauma: Occurring during critical stages of development, particularly in childhood, and often linked to attachment disruptions or neglect.

Vicarious Trauma: emotional and psychological impact experienced by professionals who are exposed to the traumatic stories and experiences of their peers or clients. It often occurs in those working closely with individuals who have endured significant trauma, such as therapists, counsellors, social workers, and first responders.

Effects of Trauma

Trauma can manifest in various ways, affecting:

Emotions: Feelings of fear, anger, sadness, or numbness.

Cognition: Difficulty concentrating, memory issues, or intrusive thoughts.

Behaviour: Avoidance of triggers, hypervigilance, or unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Physical Health: Fatigue, chronic pain, or other stress-related conditions.

Healing from Trauma

Trauma recovery is a deeply individual journey that involves:

Creating a sense of safety.

Processing traumatic memories and emotions.

Building resilience and reclaiming control.

Developing supportive relationships and self-compassion.

Trauma-informed care emphasises understanding the impact of trauma and creating an environment that fosters empowerment and trust.
